This is only partially useful. The fact is that a significant amount of useful light remains long after the sun has dipped below the visible horizon as measured by this method. In fact you are likely to have anywhere between 40 and 100 minutes of light before total darkness sets in after the sun has dipped below the horizon. That's why the military doesn't talk about sunrise and sunset, they talk about first and last light; that is, the first or final lightening of the sky (known as astronomical twilight - when the sun is 18 degrees below the horizon). It is not very long after that in the morning before we start to be able to see things more clearly when outdoors. When outside at dusk, it's the other way around. Civil twilight (when the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon) still enables you to read outdoors without artificial light. Nautical twilight (when the sun is 12 degrees below the horizon) doesn't allow reading without artifical light, but still enables the ability to complete many outdoor tasks and even to recognize bold terrain features at a reasonable distance, etc., By Astranomical twilight (when the sun is 18 degrees below the horizon), it's very hard to see things without artifical light. One trick, however, is to not look directly at an object. Look slight ot the side of it and you can see it easier. Fake light such as flashlights and vehicle headlights in the eyes will, however, negatively affect the ability to adjust to the fading light and make max use of what light left when they are turned off. For hunters and military, always observe with the non-shooting eye, so that if it's affected by fake light, such as a vehicle headlihgt, you've still got a properly adjusted eye to shoot with. The effected you will take about 30 minutes to adjust again.

You are correct! That's why we're only measuring until sunset, and not last light. It's a good partial measurement to give you time to get back to camp/your car/ or wherever before you lose light. Thanks for watching!

I'm not sure exactly where to place the hat over the sun ... is it the peak part, or the cap part? Is it the base of the peak of the hat? Thanks.

That's a joke, right? It doesn't matter what object you use to block the sun; a ball cap, a paper plate or the nighbour's cat. Just use something (anything) to block it and then use the other hand to measure. It's not rocket science!

Thanks for asking. I like to block the Sun with the bill of my hat at the bottom of the sun. Then, use your fingers to measure from the bottom of the bill to the horizon.

Such a cool thing to know! So helpful. Thank you. Also, do you take requests? I would love to know your tried and true methods and product recommendations for repelling bugs like mosquitos, ticks, etc.
